#   Like his predecessors, Mr. Obama rejects the idea that retrenchment means the fading of American power. [어휘 또는 표현]

retrenchment [ritrénʧmənt] : (격식) 단축, 긴축, 축소, 감소; (비용의) 절감, 절약  : (L re- : back + truncare : to cut) [ㅎ 트렌치 코트]

in decline : 쇠퇴하고 있는  : to become less powerful, wealthy, etc.

on the decline : 아래로 향하여; 내리받이로; 기울어져; 쇠퇴하고 있는(= in decline) [평면일 때 구체성이 강해 정관사 사용한다.]

There was a general feeling that the country was in decline. "그 나라는 쇠퇴하고 있다는 일반적인 느낌이었다."

He is still one of the world's most popular golfers, but his game is in decline.

triumph [tráiəmf]: 승리; 개선식  : (Gk thriambos : hymn to Bacchus → L trimphus → O F  triumphe)

trump [trʌmp] : [카드놀이] 으뜸패; (비유) 비방, 최후 수단, 비장의 수; (비격식) 훌륭한[굉장한] 사람, 호남; (비장의 수로) 이기다 ['triumph'에서 변형된 것]

harrumph [hərΛmf]: (불만의 표시로) 헛기침(을 하다); 귀에 거슬리는 목쉰 소리(로 말하다) : to clear or make the noise of clearing the throat; to express anger and disapproval, often not by speaking but making a noise

I didn't hear what he said - he sort of harrumphed and walked off.
