[핵심 문법] the 비교급 + the 비교급

'as ~ so ~(~함에 따라 그만큼 더 ~하다)'는 'the 비교급 + the 비교급'으로 전환이 가능한데 이 문장의 심층 구조를 분석하면 다음과 같다.

he gets x more; he wants y more; y = x

원급의 비교에서는 'y = x'면 'y'와 'x'를 모두 'as'로 바꿨는데 여기서는 'as'를 사용할 수 없다. 'as' 다음에는 원급이 와야 하므로 비교급인 'more'가 따를 수 없기 때문이다. 그래서 'y'와 'x'를 모두 'the'로 바꾸는데 '그만큼(x) 더; 그만큼(y) 더'에서 'the'는 '그만큼'의 뜻으로 쓰이는 것이다.

→ he gets the(= x) more; he wants the(= y) more

여기서 두 개의 절을 연결하기 위해서 조건절에 해당하는 'the(= x) more'를 접속사로 쓰기 위해서 자기 절의 맨 앞으로 이동시킨다.

→ The more he gets, he wants the(= y) more

여기서 'The'는 절을 이끌면서 '뒤의 the'와 상관해서 쓰이기 때문에 '비교 상관 접속사'로 기능한다고 볼 수 있다. 그리고 뒤의 'the more'를 앞의 'The more'와 대구를 이루게 하기 위하여 자기 절의 앞으로 이동시킨다.

→ The more he gets, the more he wants.

여기서 'the'는 '앞의 The'와 상관해서 쓰이면서 정도 부사로 기능한다고 볼 수 있어 '비교 상관 부사'로 볼 수 있다.

The harder they worked, the hungrier they became. "그들은 더 열심히 일할수록 그만큼 더 배고파졌다."

→ As they worked harder, so they became hungrier.

The hungrier they became, the harder they worked. "그들은 더 배고파질수록 그만큼 더 열심히 일했다."

보통은 조건절 쪽이 앞에 오기 때문에 이처럼 뜻이 달라진다.

The harder he worked, the happier he felt. "더 열심히 일했을 때 더욱 행복함을 느꼈다."

→ When he worked harder, he felt happier.

이처럼 'when 절'로 전환될 수 있는 경우도 있다.

They became (the) hungrier the harder they worked. 그들은 그만큼 더 배가 고파졌다. 더 열심히 일할수록."

She played (the) better, the more she practised. "그녀는 더 잘 연주했다. 더 많이 연습할수록."

주절에 해당하는 부분이 앞에 나올 때는 'the 비교급'은 원래 자리에 두고 자기 절의 앞으로 이동시키지 않으며 이때 조건에 해당하는 'the'가 아직 나오지 않았기 때문에 간혹 'the'를 생략하기도 한다.

As we go higher, the air becomes rarer. "더 높이 올라감에 따라 공기는 희박해진다."

→ The higher we go, the rarer the air becomes. "더 높이 올라갈수록 공기는 그만큼 더 희박해진다."

→ The higher we go, the rarer becomes the air.

2형식의 경우 '보어 + 동사 + 주어'의 순서로 쓰이기도 한다.

The higher we go, the rarer it becomes.

The higher we go, the rarer *becomes it.

주어가 대명사일 경우에는 도치해서 쓰지 못한다.

At a press conference, the more you argue, the shakier you sound. 

"기자회견에서는 더 많이 따질수록 그만큼 더 수상하게 된다."

You'll get the more support the more serious you are. "더 많은 지지를 받게 될 거다. 그만큼 더 진지해질수록."

The more she thought about it, the less she liked it. "그것에 대해 더 많이 생각할수록 그게 그만큼 덜 좋아졌다."

'그만큼 덜 ~하다'의 경우에는 'the less (~)'가 쓰인다.

The more he reads the less he understands. "더 많이 읽을수록 그는 이해가 덜 되었다."

The more we discuss the question, *the more it seems to become difficult. 

→ The more we discuss the question, the more difficult it seems to become. 

"문제를 더 많이 논의할수록 그건 더 어려워 보였다."

The more ardently he tried to attract my attention, *the less I became interested.

→ The more ardently he tried to attract my attention, the less interested I became. 

"그가 더 열심히 내 주의를 끌려고 할수록 나는 관심이 줄어들었다."

여기서 'the more'와 'the less'는 명사도 아니고 'became'과 관련된 부사일 수도 없으므로 'difficult'와 'interested'에 붙어 있는 것이므로 함께 앞으로 나와야 한다.

[more old], [more wise] '늙을수록 현명'

The [older] we are, the [wiser] we become.

짧고 마치 등위 된 것이어서 '(the) more old, (the) more wise'에서 'the'는 흔히 생략된 것이고 'the 비교급'에서는 단음절임에도 'more old'가 허용되고 있다.

The higher (is) the standard of living, the greater (is) the amount of paper used. 

"생활 수준이 더 높아질수록 사용되는 종이의 량은 그만큼 많아진다."

'be 동사'는 흔히 간결하게 하기 위해 생략되기도 한다.

the less / least said (about somebody / something) the better "적게, 가장 적게 말할수록 더 좋다."

I think the less said about this battle the better. 

"내 생각에 이 싸움에 대해서는 더 적게 말할수록 그만큼 더 좋다."

Docherty was almost laconic. "The least said the better," he rapped. 

"다커티는 거의 말수 없었다. "가장 적게 말하는 것이 더 좋은 겨.'라고 준엄하게 말했다."

이 경우에 'the 최상급'이 'the 비교급'과 상관될 수도 있음을 주의한다.

"그들은 앞으로 옮겼다. 연사의 말을 더 잘 듣기 위하여."

= They moved to the front in order to hear the speaker better.

목적 표시의 부정사 앞에 'the better'를 써서 '더 잘 ~하기 위해서'의 뜻으로 사용하는데 '이전 상황'에 비해 '목적된 상황'이 '더 잘 듣는 것'이므로 당연 'the 비교급'이 사용되고 있는 것이다. 'in order to V'를 쓰면 뒤로 보내고 'the'를 쓰지 않는다.
