#    Kistle's package was delivered by UPS late the next afternoon. It was the size of a shirt box and wrapped in brown paper.

  Joe brought it up to the porch. "It's very light. Do you want me to open it?"

  "No, I'll do it." Eve stared at the box for a moment before taking it. It wasn't going to bite her. Or maybe it would. She wouldn't put it (A)[     ] Kistle to put a tarantula in the box.

   Nevertheless, she had to open it.

   She tore off the brown paper and opened the white box.

     "아니요, 제가 할게요." 이브는 잠깐 박스를 바라보다가 받았다. 뭐 이브를 물 게 있는 거 같진 않았다. 아니 어쩌면 그럴 수도 있었다. 이브는 키슬이 박스에 타란툴라도 넣고도 남을 놈이라고 생각했다.

     그럼에도 불구하고 이브는 그걸 열어야만 했다.

     갈색 포장지를 뜯어내고 흰 상자를 오픈했다.

[past]

[전치사] : to or on the further one side of something  [동사 'pass'의 의미를 살려서 이해한다.]

1) (시간이) 지나서

It's ten past eleven. 

2) [장소·위치를] 지나서

I dashed past him and out of the door. 

3) (수·양·나이·능력·한도·범위 등을) 넘어서 → 지나쳐서 못 하는  : no longer capable of ~

He was well past retirement age. "그는 은퇴할 나이를 한참 지났다."

He was past his prime as a player by then. "그는 당시는 이미 전성기를 지났다."

You're past sucking your thumb, so don't do it. "엄지 빨 나이는 지났으니 하지 마라."

The child is past drinking from a bottle. "게는 젖병 물 나이는 지났다."

He is past giving the best advice. "그는 이제 최고의 조언은 (시기가 지나서) 못 한다."

She was past caring about anything by then and just wanted the pain to end. 

"그는 당시엔 어떤 것도 (많이 겪다 보니) 살필 수가 없었고 그저 고통이 끝나기를 원했다."

Often by the time they do accept the truth they are past being able to put words to feelings.

['(누가) 기도해도 소용없다'라는 뜻, 'it'는 주어와 같으면 사용 안 한다.]

The problem is past the point of resolution. "문제는 해결할 시기가 넘었어."

남이 못 할 것 없다고 생각하다 → 당근 ~할 만하다, 놀랍지도 않아, 그러고도 남지 ← [ㅎ 지나쳐 떨어진 게 아니야.]

: used to say that you would not be surprised if someone did something, especially something bad, because it is a typical thing for them to do; Based on that person's pattern of behavior, it is not impossible to imagine them engaging in that kind of bad behavior.

전치사 구인 'past 사람'과 'to 부정사'만 대상으로 보면 '~하는 것'이 '지나쳐서 분리되었다'라는 뜻인데 앞에 'not'이 있으므로 '아직 붙어 있다'라는 뜻이다. 영어는 분리의 개념이면 어느 것이 전치사 다음에 나오든 개의치 않는다. 'He must be out of his mind.'에서 '그가 나갔던, 정신이 나갔던 분리되기는 매한가지다.

I wouldn't put it past him to lie. "겐 거짓말 아직도 하고도 남지."

He wouldn't put it past Caitlin to have stopped work and gone home for the night, even though she knew how important it was. "그는 케이틀린이 일을 그만하고 자러 집으로 갔었을 수도 있다고 생각했다. 게는 그게 아주 중요한 일인 걸 알았으면서도."
