     그녀에겐 눈에 보이는 것보다 더 많은 것이 있음을 느꼈다. 그녀가 죽어라 감추고자 했던 불안정한 슬픔이 그것이었다. 그녀는 난제였다. 몇 년 내에 쫓아다녀야만 했던 첫 여자였다.

      그녀가 그에게 등을 돌리고 엽기적인 포니테일로 묶은 마호가니 색깔의 머리칼을 무심결에 튕기면서 가버린 처음 순간부터 그는 욕망에 빠져있었다. 그때 이래로 상황은 그다지 변한 게 없었다.

인사조차 나누지 않다; 개무시하다  : ignore someone, refuse the slightest attention to someone; this expression alludes to refusing even to answer the question, "What time is it?"  ['What is the time of day?'(지금 몇 시?)라는 질문에 대답도 하지 않으니 '개무시하는 거다'.]

He's tried to be friendly but she won't give him the time of day. 

"그는 친절하려고 노력했지만 그녀는 그를 개무시했다."

There is y much to that problem /  x much meets the eye.  [그 문제엔 y 만큼이 존재한다. +  x 만큼이 눈에 보인다(닿는다). 그런데 y > x ]

'y much'를 'more'로 전환하고 'x much'를 비교 접속사로 사용하기 위해 'than'을 사용하고 자기 절의 앞으로 보낸다. 그러면 단수형인 'meets'가 사용되는 것이 이해된다.

A horrible sight met her eyes. "무서운 광경이 그녀의 눈에 띄었다."
