[어휘 또는 표현]

[해설]

['자질과 노력의 make' : 목적어 생략의 2형식 동사 '되다'의 'make']

make : [사람이] (발달·성장해서) ~이 되다, 결국 ~가 되다; [물건이] ~가 되다 : to be or be capable of being changed or fashioned into; to develop into; To attain the rank or position of; to be suited for; to develop into

She will make (*herself) a good wife. "그녀는 훌륭한 아내가 될 것이다."

'자기 자신을 훌륭한 아내로 만들 것이다.'에서 재귀 목적어인 'herself'가 필수적으로 생략되고서 'make'는 '되다'의 뜻으로 쓰이는데 이때 'make'를 '목적어 생략의 2형식 동사'라 칭한다.

자질이나 노력 여하에 따라서 된다는 점에서 'become'과 의미상으로 차이가 난다.

He will make (*himself) an excellent scholar. "그는 뛰어난 학자가 될 것이다."

He made (*himself) full general in 1932. "그는 1932년 대장이 되었다."

I bet you'll make a good teacher. "틀림없다. 너는 훌륭한 선생님이 될 거야."

I wouldn't make a good nurse because I can't bear the sight of blood.

"나는 훌륭한 간호사가 되지 못할 것이다. 피를 보는 것을 견디지 못하니까."
