   Kyle ignored his friend's attempt at amends. They'd known each other far too long to take offense at careless remarks. Besides which, Ryan was right. Kyle had been burned before, and badly.    "사람들은 돈을 빨리 벌기 위해서 몸을 낮추어 거의 어떤 짓이라도 하지. 이건 자네에게 상기시킬 필요는 없는 거지." 라이언은 뭔가 더 말하려다 입을 다물기로 빠르게 결정했다. 자기 말이 너무 사적인 것이 되게 할 의도는 없었고 카일의 눈빛이 신랄하기도 했다. 그는 사과하고자 했다. "내 말 오해하지 말게나."

   카일은 친구의 화해 시도를 신경 쓰지 않았다. 그들은 안 지가 하도 오래되어서 부주의한 말에 화를 내지 안는다. 이외에도 라이언의 말은 맞는 말이었다. 카일은 전에 크게 데인 적이 있었다. 전처인 로즈는 이혼에 관련된 유명세를 자신의 커리어의 발판으로 삼으려 이용했다. 그는 똑같은 실수를 다시 하고 싶지 않았다. 자기의 실수로 누군가가 이득을 보게 하지 않을 작정이었다. 그는 회사를 등한시했지만 이제는 그러지 않기로 결심했다. 그의 얼굴에 번지는 미소는 눈까지 미치지는 않았다.
