어떤 사회에서나 일어날 수 있는 급격한 변화 또는 놀라울 정도로 급속하게 사람들의 반응들이 일어나는 상태를 의미함. 어떤 사람이 갑자기 관심의 대상이 된다든지 아니면 어떤 물건이 미친 듯이 팔리기 시작한다든지, 어떤 책이 베스트셀러로 부상한다든지 하는 행동들은 모두 티핑 포인트가 일어나는 예가 된다. 말콤 글래드웰의 동명의 책이 인기를 끈 바가 있다.

[해설]

tipping point  ← point of tipping : 명사가 앞으로 나간 것이므로 'tipping'에 강세가 놓인다.

'tips, and spreads'에서 'tips'를 바꿔서 사용하든지 아니면 'the tipping point phenomenon'에서 'tipping'을 그대로 넣으면 된다.

[tip[turn] the scales(or balance) 또는 swing the balance]

저울[추]을 기울이다; 균형을 무너지게 하다 

: to upset the balance of a situation, such that one side or element is favored or gains advantage

The two candidates are so close in the polls that both are vying for something that will tip the scale in their favor. "두 후보자는 여론 조사에서 아주 근접해서 둘은 자신에게 유리하게 저울 추를 기울게 할 뭔가를 찾아 경쟁하고 있다."
