#1.  Were the Australian extinction an isolated event, we could grant humans the (A)[      ] of the doubt. But the historical record makes Homo sapiens look like an ecological serial killer.

  All the settlers of Australia had at their disposal was Stone Age technology. How could they cause an ecological disaster? There are three explanations that mesh quite nicely.

 

#2. "Be quiet, Montalvo. I'm doing the best I can. I have to keep this low-key. You don't have to pay me until we locate Bobby Joe. But I'd appreciate it if you'd give this option the (B)[       ] of the doubt." He paused. "Or else you might end up with egg on your face."

  Montalvo hadn't expected that last remark. He'd thought it had been desperation that had led Venable to come up with this bizarre scheme, but he knew few men more clever or practical. "You actually believe this is a solution?"

  "Hell, yes, I've seen it happen."

 

# 빈칸 (A)와 (B)에 공통으로 들어갈 단어는?

   "몬탈보는 그 마지막 말을 예상하지 못 했다. 그는 하도 필사적이다 보니 베너블이 이 기괴한 계획을 생각해 냈다고 생각했지만 베너블보다 더 영리하고 더 실용적인 사람을 거의 알지 못했다. "자네, 정말로 이게 해결책이라 생각하는 구먼?"

   "지랄 그렇고말고. 실제로 해결되는 것을 본 적이 있어."

[어휘 또는 표현]

Our personalities just don't mesh. "우리의 성격은 잘 맞지 않는다."

There are three explanations that mesh quite nicely.

설명들이 서로 간에 아귀가 맞아들어간다는 뜻이므로 'mesh'를 사용한다.

At first I gave him the benefit of the doubt. "처음엔 나도 그를 무죄로 간주했다."

Let's give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she's right. 

"일단 의심은 가지만 그녀에게 유리하게 해석해서 그녀가 맞는다고 추정하자."

I am basically a trusting person. I make it a practice to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

"나는 기본적으로 사람을 믿는 사람이다. 나는 보통 모든 사람을 유리하게 해석한다."

You're my sister! Can't you give me the benefit of the doubt, instead of believing the worst about me right away? "내 여동생이잖아! 나에 대한 가장 심한 말들을 바로 믿지 말고 의심스러워도 일단 내 말을 믿을 수는 없는 거야?"

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt before we start accusing him. There may be a good explanation for the missing money.

"그를 비난하기 전에 그를 일단 믿어보자. 돈이 없어진 것에 대한 확실한 설명이 있을 수는 있는 거니까."
