innuendo [ìnjuéndou] : 암시, 넌지시 비침, 빗댐   : (L in- : towards + nuere : to nod → innuere → L innuendo : by nodding at, by pointing to) [원래는 법구를 설명할 때 의례적으로 (안다고) 고개를 끄덕이는(nuere : nod) 데서 발생한 표현, 'innuendo'를 기억하자.] 

wryly [ráili] : 얼굴을 찡그려; 비꼬는 식으로, 빈정대듯이

My point is, first ~ = My point is that first ~  : 'comma' 사용한 삽입 처리.

[해설]

lo [lou] : 보라; 아, 자  : used to tell people to pay attention and look at something interesting  [간투사로 Middle E, O E 출신, 'low'와 같은 발음.]

간투사(間投詞) : 놀람이나 감동 따위의 느낌, 부름이나 대답 등을 이르는 말 ['한자로는 사이에(간) 던지는(투) 말'의 뜻이다.]

Lo, an angel appears. "보라. 천사가 나타나신다."

behold : ~을 주시하다, 지켜보다; 바라보다; 이해하다  : see or observe   : (O E bi- : thoroughly + haldan : to hold)  [게르만어 잡다(hold)의 뜻인데 영어에서만 '보다'의 뜻이 있음] [ㅎ 눈으로 잡다]

[lo and behold]

하 이것 봐라 : look and see; used to indicate something surprising or unexpected  ['lo'는 'look'의 준말로 보아도 되지만 'O!'의 뜻으로도 많이 사용되었음]

Lo and behold! There is Fred! He beat us here by taking a shortcut. (상투 어구 = Look here!)

"하 이것 봐라. 프레드님이 등장하시네요. 지름길을 택해서 우릴 박살 내고 여기 와있네."

I'd been searching for my glasses all over the house when, lo and behold, they were on my head the whole time.

"난 안경을 찾아 온 집안을 뒤졌는데, 하 이것 봐라. 안경은 내내 내 머리 위에 있었네."

I walked into the restaurant and, lo and behold, there was my boss with his wife.

[tell me about it]

(1) Tell me about it. "털어놔" (= Spit it out.)

일반 명령문으로는 오히려 드물게 쓰인다.

A : I just had a job interview.

B : Tell me about it. "얘기 좀 해봐."

'나는 모른다'라는 뜻이다.

(2) Tell me about it. "나한테 말하는 겨?", "누가 아니래.", "내 말이."

★ 'me'에 문장 강세(Sentence stress)를 줘서 말한다.

A : I hate exams.

B : Tell me about it. "너만 그려?", "나도 싫어.", "내 말이."

'모른다'라는 뜻이 전혀 아니다. 난 당연히 알고 있으며 주로 '부정적인 동감'을 나타낼 때 쓰인다.

= Don't tell me about it, because I know all about it already.

[이런 비꼬는 투의 반대 의미는 뉴욕 유대계의 'Yiddish'의 영향이라고도 한다.]

[now, you tell me]

Now, you tell me. "퍽이나 일찍 말하네.", "이제야 말하네." (Why you didn't tell me before?)

'Now'에 문장 강세를 두고 강약 강약으로 말한다. 의미 중심도 'Now'가 차지한다. 약간은 비난조입니다.

Now you are talking. "이제야 제대로 말하네."

'Now'에 문장 강세 'you are'은 약으로 'talking'은 강으로 말한다.

You can say that again. "백 번 지당한 말씀."

맞장구치는 것으로 'Now, you tell me.'와는 전혀 다른 맥락에서 쓰입니다.

[come to]

정신이 들다 : to recover consciousness  ['to'는 드물게 부사로 사용되고 강한 발음인 '[túː]'를 사용한다. 요즘은 '정신이 들다'의 뜻으로는 'come to one's senses'보다 'come to'를 주로 사용한다.]

When he came to and raised his head he saw Barney. "그가 깨어나서 머리를 들었을 때 바니가 보였다."

The patient wasn't sure where he was when he came to in the emergency room.

You're more likely to wake with a start if you're stressed or your sleep patterns are disturbed.

She awoke with a start. With a terrible shriek, she broke free from the trucker and leapt to her feet.

보통 '놀라서'는 'in surprise'를 사용하는데 드물게 'with surprise'를 사용하기도 한다. 그러나 'wake with surprise'는 거의 사용되지 않는다.

The old woman turned her head to look at her in surprise. "노부인은 놀라서 머리를 돌려 그녀를 보았다."

It was her turn to look at him with surprise; and after a moment-- "Do you want marry me?" she asked. He broke into a laugh. "No, I don't want to--but perhaps I should if you did!"
