#   The border crossing between the Soviet Union and North Korea was an uncomplicated and quick affair. First, the Soviet border guards stood to attention and saluted, and then the North Koreans did the same. Without a word being exchanged, the barrier was lifted for the Soviet marshal (Herbert) and his aide (Allan). : 보통은 'of the two' 앞에는 비교급을 사용하는데 강조형으로 드물게 사용되는 경우이다.

'make (*it) sure'에는 가 목적어를 사용하지 않으며 'that 절'에는 과거형(arrived)으로 과거 상의 미래를 표시한다.

[해설]

2형식이나 5형식의 이퀄 관계는 '지속형'과 '변화형'이 있다. 'get'은 '변화의 달성'에, 'turn'은 '변화 자체'에 'make'는 '변화의 강제성'에 의미 중심을 둔다. 'keep'은 유지, 지속에 의미 중심을 둔다. '5 마이너스 1 형식'인 경우 'Don't take them off.'(벗지 마.)보다는 모국어 화자는 'Keep them on.'(그냥 입고 있어.)으로 지속형을 사용하기를 좋아한다. 본문에서도 'keep his eyes dry'로 지속형을 사용하고 있다. 'dry his eyes'(눈을 말리다)를 사용할 수 있지만 역시 변화형이 된다. (물론 문맥상 맞지도 않다.)
