#    MacGregor's hands tightened over the steering wheel.

  He saw the horrified, fearful expression on Caruso's face and knew the guy was holding back. "Wait a sec," he said, his heart drumming with a new fear. "I'm wrong about who sent the picture, aren't I?"

  Caruso closed his eyes and bit his lower lip.

  Heart-thudding adrenaline sizzling through his bloodstream, he peeled around the truck, narrowly missing a parked car and eliciting a loud, angry honk from the delivery vehicle as he headed for the hotel.    맥그리거는 이 남자가 잔머리를 굴리고 있는 것이 거의 보일 지경이었다.

   "아이고, 하나님." 카루소는 머리를 천천히 가로저으며 마치 자신의 불길한 생각이 드는 것을 부인하려는 듯 속삭였다. "전 그녀가 이렇게까지 할 줄은 몰랐어요."

   "뭐라고, 이 개자식아! 누구라고?" 맥그리거는 앞 트럭이 다시 움직이기 시작할 때 따져 물었다. "뭘 안다는 거야?"

   "팔다에요."라고 카루소는 말했는데 턱이 굳어지고 있었다.

   "뭐라고?"

   "팔다. 제 아내요. 제 두 번 째 아내요. 그녀는 ... 그녀는 최근에 가버렸었지만 지금은 스포캔에 돌아와 있어요." 그의 턱 옆의 근육이 실룩거렸다. "맥그리거, 밟으세요."라고 충고했다. "팔다는 뭘 원하면 어떤 것도 방해하게 두질 않아요. 지랄 확실히 질리안을 죽이길 원하는 거예요."

   맥그리거는 차를 냅다 밟았다.

   심장이 쿵쿵거리며 아드레날린이 혈중에서 지글거리며 맥그리거는 트럭을 스치듯 돌아가면서 주차된 차를 가까스로 피해 가면서 호텔로 향할 때 그 배달 차량에서 분노한 시끄러운 경적 소리를 유발했다. 카루소에게는 시기심 많은 아내가 있었는데 질리안을 죽이려 할 정도로 첫 아내를 시기하는 것일까요?

[해설]
