[with colors flying]

승리한 군대는 깃발 휘두르며 전진하죠. 'with flying colors'로도 많이 사용됩니다.

With colors flying in the air to the innocent smiles on the children's faces, the festival of spring is finally here!

"아이들 얼굴의 순수한 미소에 하늘 높이 깃발 휘날리며 봄의 축제는 마침내 여기 와 있다."

He passed all the required tests with flying colors. "그는 요구되는 모든 시험들을 훌륭하게 통과했다."

[put 사람 off]

'사람 be put off' : 구동사에서 다룬 적 있습니다. 구동사 부분 참조 바람. '상황이나 무리들에게 모르게, 벗어나게(off) 하는 것'은 따돌리는 것이죠.

   "Not nearly enough to help Dori Petracelli."  Bobby gave the man a look. "You knew a vital piece of information. If you'd come forward--"

   "The police would've pursued Russel and Leslie," Schuepp stated matter-of-factly. "They would have dragged them back here to Massachusetts, exposed them to Tommy. The Petracelli girl was likely dead. I focused on the life that could be saved--yours, Annabelle."

   Bobby opened his mouth. Before he could argue, however, Annabelle beat him (A)[   ] the punch.

   "Explain that to Mr. and Mrs. Petracelli. They were parents, too. They deserved better than to have their daughter written off, just (B)[    ] their neighbors could get on with their lives." She turned away bitterly.

   Schuepp poured another shot of scotch, pushed it toward her.

     솁은 스카치 한 잔을 부어서 그녀에게 밀었다.

     그러나 그녀는 그걸 받기를 거부하고 정신 줄을 단단히 하고 바비가 익히 아는 단호한 표정을 지었다.

[해설]

beat : to defeat someone by reaching (an aim) first

I'll beat you to the winning post! "너를 깨부수고 결승점에 도착할 거다.  (winning post : 결승 푯말; 결승점)

영어에서 전치사 'to'는 방향이 아니라 ★★'도착'으로 해석해야 될 경우가 많다. 'find one's way to ~'는 '~로 가는 길을 찾는 것'이 아니라 '길을 찾아 이르렀다'로 해석한다.

[beat one to the draw]

남보다 일을 빨리하다; 기선을 제압하다; 상대방보다 빨리 칼을 빼다 : to do, find, or accomplish something quicker than someone else is able [결투에서 총을 빨리 뽑는(draw) 데서, 'to'는 방향으로 생각하지 말고 도착한 것으로 여겨서 '먼저 뽑았다'로 이해해야 한다.]

I had a perfect chance to score a goal, but their defender beat me to the draw and store the ball away.

[beat one to the punch]

남을 먼저 한 대 치다, 선수치다; 기선을 제압하다; 보다 먼저 하다; to do or obtain something before someone else does; to be quicker than (another) in doing something

[우리 식으로 '펀치 쪽으로'로 해석하면 이해가 잘 안 된다. 'to'는 도착의 개념으로 이해해야 한다. '앞서 때리게 되었다' 즉 '먼저 쾅'으로 이해해야 한다.]

He wanted to ask Mary to dance, but Ron beat him to the punch. 

"그는 메리에게 춤을 추자고 요청하길 원했지만 론이 그보다 선수를 쳤다."

I was going to suggest that idea to the boss; but unfortunately one of my co-workers beat me to the punch.

I was planning to take care of the problem for him, but he beat me to the punch and did it himself.

'the punch'를 'it'으로 쓰기도 한다. : get somewhere, reach an objective, before someone else (object : opponent, rival); to win a competition, esp. of time

We got our product onto the market as fast as we could, but the other firm still beat us to it!

"우리는 우리 상품을 가능한 한 빨리 시장에 내놓았지만 그럼에도 다른 회사는 우리보다 먼저 출시했다."

They had hoped to put their model on the market within the year, but a rival company beat them to it.

[해설]

간단히 말하면 : 부정사를 사용하면  'to put it simply', 분사를 사용하면 'simply put'

[one too many (~)]

If you have had one too many, you have drunk too much alcohol. 

"'one too many'를 마셨다는 것은 'too much alcohol(지나치게 술을 많이)' 마신 겁니다."

Bob, you're getting just a little loud. I think you've had one too many. 

"밥, 자기 조금 시끄러워지는데. 좀 과음한 것 같아."

'one drink (of an alcoholic beverage) too many'에서 온 표현이다. 원래의 의미로는 '(정상에서) 한 잔만큼 지나치게 먹다'의 뜻이지만 그냥 '너무 많이(too many)'를 사용한 경우보다 비난의 뉘앙스를 죽여서 하는 표현이다. 하지만 이 말은 '취했다는' 의미로 다 이해하며 곧 사건이 발생할 시기(tipping point)가 온다는 뜻을 함축하고 있다. 

He lost his keys when he'd one too many. (= to be drunk slightly) "그는 좀 취해서 열쇠를 잃어버렸다."

He had one too many at the bar last night. "그는 어젯밤에 바에서 좀 취했다." 

Do not drive when you have one too many as it may lead to a fatal accident. 

"치명적인 사고로 이어지니까 과음했을 때는 운전하지 마세요."

I won't loan you money, I have been stiffed one too many times. "돈 안 빌려 준다. 너무 자주 돈을 떼 먹혀서."

cf. One was too many and a thousand was never enough. 

"(알코올 중독자에게) 한 잔도 지나치게 많은 것이고 (한 잔을 먹은 후에는) 천 잔도 충분한 법이 없다."

Even one death is one too many. "한 명이 죽은 것도 지나치게 많이 죽은 것이다."

Even if one person is hurt that is one too many. 

"한 사람이 상처 입더라도 그건 지나치게 많이 상처 입은 것이다."

I think she's read one too many suspense novels.

[roll with the punches]

[권투] 옆으로 흔들면서 피하다; 힘들 때 당황하지 않고 유연하게 대처해 나가다 : cope with and withstand adversity, especially by being flexible; By extension, to adapt to setbacks, difficulties,or adversity so as to better manage or cope with their impact on one's life.

[ㅎ 펀치는 롤링하면서 피하라고 말한다. 롤링은 옆으로 흔드는 것을 말하고 로큰롤에서 'rock'은 앞, 뒤로 흔드는 것을 말한다.]

He's not the most aggressive fighter, but he relies on his endurance and skill, rolling with the punches to wear down his opponent until the best moment to strike. "그는 가장 공격적인 파이터는 아니지만 인내와 기술을 의지해서 펀치는 좌우로 흔들며 피하면서 상대를 지치게 하면서 공격할 적기를 노렸다."

She'd had three different editors for her book, each with a different style, but she'd learned to roll with the punches. 

"그는 세 명의 다른 편집자가 있었는데 각각은 스타일도 달랐지만 그녀는 유연하게 대처하는 방법을 배웠다."

[pull one punches]

펀치를 댕기다, 살살 대하다 → 펀치를 댕기는 것은 손속을 맵게 하지 않는다는 뜻이다.

: to act as if one is punching someone, without making any or much physical contact.

​The boxer started pulling his punches, and the ref ended the fight. 

"복서는 펀치를 댕기기 시작했고 레프리는 시합을 중단시켰다."

I want your honest opinion of my story—don't pull your punches! 

"난 내 기사에 대해 너의 정직한 견해를 원한다. 봐주지 말고!"

​Wow, your aunt really doesn't pull her punches. Is my sweatshirt really that ugly?
