#1. She wondered if the medical examiner, Ben Whitley, was here. Neil and Ben had been dating for a little over a year now. Not an office romance, per se, but an industry one. Made D.D. uneasy about what might happen in the event of a breakup. ['what'은 선행사 포함의 관계사로 전치사 'for'의 목적어 자리와 전치사 'worth'의 목적어 자리를 채워준다. 'it'은 지금 하는 얘기이고 'for'는 가치라 '해봤자지만'의 뜻이다. 하지만 'for all one/it is worth'와는 ★의미가 같을 수도 있고 다를 수도 있다.]

'for what it's worth'와 다른 뜻인 경우와 비슷한 뜻인 경우

1) (다른 뜻인 경우)  최대한으로, 기량을 다해 

for all it is worth : 최대한으로 (이용해서), 기량을 다해 : to the full extent of its powers, resources, energy

for all one is worth : 기량을 다해, 전력으로 : to the full extent of one's powers, resources, energy

Mr Salinger plays the ingredients (of his novel) for all he is worth.

"샐린저 씨는 기량을 다해 (자기 소설의) 주요 등장인물들을 연기했다."

With the wind blowing for all it was worth against them they had a hard time of it at the oars.

★ : 그까짓 것 다래 봤자니까, ~ 안 한다

but I, etc. don't care / know etc : So far as I am, etc. concerned (used to indicate that no real interest, concern, or worry is felt) : considering how little one cares / knows etc

You can do it, for all I care. "그거 해도 돼. 난 상관[걱정] 안 해."

'for'는 전치사이고 'all'이 있는데 부정으로 해석하는 게 이해하기 어렵다.

I give up. Jeremy can sleep through the whole summer for all I care.

"난 기권. 제레미는 여름 내내 자라고 해. 난 상관 안 해."

'내 아무리 신경 쓴다 해도'로 해석하면 안 된다. '아무리 신경 쓰는 것'은 신경을 많이 쓴다는 표현이기 때문이다.

Do as you like, for all I care. "좋을 대로 해라. 난 상관 안 해."

: used to say that I'm not interested in or worried about what someone else is doing.

'all'이 있는데 'not'이 패러프레이즈에 등장하는 게 이상하게 여겨질 수 있다.

: considering how little one cares '내가 걱정하는 게 아주 적다는 걸 고려하면'으로 이해하면 된다.

She grasped him by (a)[his shoulders → the shoulders].

사람을 건드리거나 잡을 때는 먼저 대상을 지칭하고(grasped him) 뒤에 다시 정관사(the)를 사용한다.

I can't (b)[apply for] the job of your psychiatrist

기관, 단체 등에 지원하는(to) 것이 아니고 일 자체에 지원하는 것이므로 'for'를 사용하는 것이 맞다.

Yet he never could (d)[bring himself to] call her again. 

'bring oneself to ~'는 '애써 ~할 마음이 내키다'의 뜻이다.
