[turn on(전치사) ~]

1) 공격하다, 비난하다 → 대들다, 덤벼들다 : to attack or criticize someone suddenly

The dog turned on his own master. "개는 갑자기 (몸을 돌려) 주인에게 덤벼들었다."

['on'이 전치사이므로 '*turned his own master on'으로 'on'을 위치시켜서는 안 된다. 그리고 자동사로 사용되며 재귀 목적어를 사용하지 않는다.] 

The dog turned on its owner, biting him in the leg. "개는 주인에게 갑자기 덤벼들어 다리를 물었다."

Why did she turned on me / *turned me on  like that? I said something to offend her?

"그녀는 왜 저렇게 나에게 덤벼들며 비난하지? 내가 뭐 기분 나쁘게 할 말을 했나?"

I know he seems friendly, but he'll turn on you in an instant if you disagree with him.

"그가 우호적인 것 같지만 네가 다른 의견을 보이면 즉시 공격적인 태도를 보일 거야."

He suddenly turned on me and accused me of not supporting him when he needed it.

Dan suddenly turned on her and yelled at her to be quiet.

2) 의존하다 : depend on something  [ㅎ 붙어서 돌면 의존할 수밖에]

The case turns on the judge's opinion of the prisoner's character.

He's very nice, but he just doesn't turn me on. "그는 매우 멋지지만 난 그냥 흥분이 안돼."

[take on (부사)]

부사 'on' 다음에 생략된 것이 '자신의 몸'이면 '붙어보다' → '도전하다'의 뜻이 된다. ['take'는 타동사, 'on'은 부사]

It was brave of you to take on θ a man twice your size. "덩치가 두 배인 남자와 붙었다니 참 용감했구나."

'on'의 생략된 목적어는 'your body'라고 이해하면 된다.

I knew I couldn't take him on. "나는 알고 있었다. 내가 그와 붙어서는 안 된다는 것을."

I will take him on at tennis. "나는 테니스 한 판 그와 붙어 볼 거야."

I am willing to take him on if he disrespects me again. "그가 나를 다시 무시하면 기꺼이 자식과 붙어볼 거야."

Democrats were reluctant to take on a president whose popularity ratings were so high.

[해설]

'on'은 몸에 붙이는 것을 의미한다. 살이 찌든 옷을 걸치든 그렇다. 바지 멜빵을 걸치는 것도 'put on'을 사용한다. 댕겨 주어서 입는 것은 당연 'pull on'을 사용할 것이다. 던져 놓았던 로브를 댕겨 걸치는 것을 의미한다.

Anyway, it never seemed to stop anyone before.

'never'는 'seemed' 옆에 있지만 부정 상승된 것으로 'to stop'에 붙여서 해석한다.
