# Some students will stick with the discipline long enough to appreciate "the big picture." The vast majority wil not. Indeed, most bright, intellectually curious college students suffer through Econ 101, are happy to pass, and then wave goodbye to the subject forever. 'it'은 'bad news'로 이해하면 된다. 'on'은 평평한 바닥이라고 생각하고 대놓고 말하라는 뜻이다.

# KIPP is a middle school. Classes are large: the fifth grade has two sections of thirty-five students each. There are no entrance exams or admissions requirement. 게임에 들어가거나 (go in (for) ~), 베팅을 하려면 '칩을 넣고 들어가기에' 'go in'이 'chip in'로 바뀌어서 사용된 것이다.

B : Yes, I'd be happy to chip in. "갹출하는 거 좋지."

'chip in'이 타동사로 사용된 경우로 'put another hundred in (the game)'으로 이해하면 된다.

타동사로 쓰인 경우이므로 'in'이 뒤에 위치할 수 있다.

[각출과 갹출]

3) 끼어들다 : cut in 

'chip'은 원래 영어에서 'cut'의 뜻인 데서 'cut in'과 같은 뜻이 된다. [참고로 'chisel'(조각칼, 끌, 정)은 라틴어 'caedere'(cut)에서 온 단어이다.]

Other committee members chipped in with suggestions. 

"다른 위원들이 끼어들어 제안을 했다."

'Give her a kiss, Robbie,' chipped in one of the photographers. 

"사진사들 중의 한 명이 '로비, 그녀에게 키스하세요.'라고 끼어들어 말했다."
