# Oh, for Pete's sake. This one is impossible. He disappeared. He just stopped calling you or writing you or seeing you out of the blue. You were in what you considered some sort of "relationship." You felt that whatever you had together warranted even the tiniest explanation if one of you decided to call it (A)[         ]. But instead, there's silence. No explanation, no good-bye. 느닷없이, 뜻밖에 : suddenly and unexpectedly ['blue'는 파란 하늘(out of a clear blue sky)을 의미하고 갑자기 '벼락(thunderbolt)'이치는 것을 말한다. 우리 말로는 '청천 벽력(bolt out of the blue)'과 같다고 하나요. '마른하늘에 날벼락'이라고 하나요? 아니면 좀 야하게 '아닌 밤중에 홍두깨'라고 하나요?]

바람 맞히다; 버리고 가다 : to walk out on; to leave someone

James agreed to go on a date with Ella, but bailed on her at the last time.

"제임스는 엘라와 데이트하기로 약속했지만 마지막에 가서 엘라를 바람 맞혔다."

Come on, I highly doubt that Angela would bail on you after one fight.

"왜 이래, 한 번 싸우고 안젤라가 자넬 버렸다는 거 정말 말도 안 돼."

It comes from bail as in "bail out" of an aircraft in danger. To suddenly exit to save yourself, leaving the plane to crash. If someone bail on you, you are the plane, and they are leaving you to do what they want. "위험한 상태의 비행기에서 '낙하산을 타고 탈출하는' 데서 나온 표현이다. 갑자기 살려고 비행기는 추락하게 두는 거죠. 누군가가 당신을 'bail on'하면 당신이 추락하는 비행기인 셈이고 그는 당신을 버리고 떠나는 거죠. 자신의 원하는 것을 하기 위해서요."

"You ain't gonna find none here," Jeremy said. "We're every one of us law-abiding citizens. James Weaver's pa, he's even a lawyer."

But Marshal Fain wasn't about to be (A)[        ] off by a mangy flock of boys. "There's people been stealing the Nigras, and there's people been hiding 'em out."

James's chest tightened. Should he run for home? But what if the marshal got suspicious and followed him home and went after Ma? What if he asked had they seen any runaway slaves, and Rebecca blabbed it all out about the ones that had been sleeping in their bedrooms and attic, sometimes so many of them that they put bedrolls all over the floor and had to eat in shifts. 따돌림당하다; (능동) 따돌리다

The rent collector comes tomorrow, and I've no money; how can I put him off θ?

"월세 징수인이 내일 올 예정인데 난 돈이 하나도 없어. 어떻게 하면 그를 (나에게서) 벗어나 있게(off) / 따돌릴 수 있을까?"

The grocer won't be put off θ with airy promises any longer; he wants his money.

'off'의 생략된 목적어는 'me'나 'us'일 것이다.

go on : 지껄여 대다 ['on and on and on']

hinge on ~ : (행동·결과 등이) 전적으로 ~에 달려 있다 [문 같은 것은 경첩 위에 달려 있는 거죠.]

[(not) let on (to someone) (about someone or something]

폭로하다, 누설하다, 자백하다; ~인 체하다, 허세를 부리다 → 내색하지 않다, 드러내지 않다(not) : reveal or divulge information to someone;

['on'의 의미는 '떠 있게, 드러나게' 허용하다는 뜻이다.]

He let on Ø that[like] he was sick. "그는 자신이 아픈 양했다."

'let'의 목적어는 'that 절'이고 '앞으로 나온 부사 on'의 숨어 있는 목적어는 'his face'쯤 된다.

They all let on that they didn't hear me. "그들 모두는 내 말을 안 들은 척했다."

He knew the fact but he never let on (about it).

"그는 사실을 알았지만 드러내지는 않았다."

'표정에 드러내지 않는다'라는 뜻이다.

'take on'이나 'put on (airs)'에서 사용되는 'on'과 같은 의미다.

Don't let on that I told you. "내가 네게 말했다는 거 드러나면[말하면] 안 돼."

How did she plan the surprising party without letting on to her husband?

"남편에게 드러내지 않고 깜짝파티를 어떻게 준비했을까?"

드러남의 대상을 나타낼 때는 'to'를 사용한다.
