the days to (B)[come]

앞으로의 날들을 수식할 때 현재 분사는 전치 수식으로 부정사는 후치 수식으로 사용한다.

[상태 수동태와 후치 수식]

It really is a dream come true. "그건 정말로 꿈이 실현된 것이다."

'a dream come true'는 관계절로 전환하면 'a dream which has come true'와 같은 뜻이다. [실현된 결과적 용법]

관계절에서 'has come'은 'having come'으로 전환할 수 없다. 일단 상태 수동태로 전환시킨다.

'a dream which is come true'로 상태 수동태로 사용할 수 있다. [실현된 현재의 상태를 중시하는 표현]

Spring has come. "봄이 왔다."

Spring is come. "봄이 와 있다."

God is come to save us!  "하나님이 와 계시네. 우릴 구하러."

'a dream which is come true'의 관계절에서 'which is'는 생략될 수 있다.

= 'a dream come true'

이처럼 상태 수동태일 때 후치 수식의 과거 분사가 뒤에 사용될 수 있다.

Her graduation is a dream come true. "그녀의 졸업은 실현된 꿈이다.  (꿈이 실현된 것이다.)

'a dream which has come true' → 'a dream which is come true' → 'a dream (which is) come true."

Was this a dream come true for you? "이것이 너에게 실현된 꿈이었어?"

→ 'a dream which had come true for you' → "a dream which was come true for you' 

시점이 과거여서 'had pp'와 'was pp'가 사용된 차이가 있을 뿐이다.

It really is a dream coming true. The dream is in the process of coming true; it has not come true yet.

"그건 정말 실현되고 있는 꿈이야. 꿈은 실현되는 중인 거야. 즉 꿈은 아직 실현되지 않았어."

현재 분사 'coming'을 사용하면 진행의 의미가 그대로 나타나게 된다.

It really is a dream that comes true. This alternative describes the moment a dream comes true.

"그건 정말로 실현되는 꿈이야. 이 표현은 꿈이 실현되는 순간을 묘사한다."

현재형의 관계절을 사용하면 즉시 동사로 꿈이 실현되는 순간을 묘사하는 표현이다.

일종의 유사 강조 구문으로 '목적어 + 현재 분사'를 지각 동사가 취한 것과 다름없다.

[해설]

['far from'과 관련된 'patch' 현상]

​[far from ~]

not at all : 전혀 아니다, 거리가 멀다  [단순히 'not'을 사용하는 것보다 'far from'을 사용하는 것이 강한 표현이다.]

[patch?]

일반적인 문법 원칙에 어긋나 보이지만 땜질을 할 수밖에 없을 때 사용되는 표현을 'patch'라고 한다.

patch : (해진 데 등에 대는) 헝겊[가죽] 조각; 상처에 대는 헝겊; 반창고; (문장의) 한 절; [컴퓨터] 패치 : 프로그램의 오류를 임시 수정하는 일

She is far from (being) a fool. "그녀는 결코 바보가 아니다."

여기서는 전치사 'from' 다음에 명사나 동명사가 따라와서 'far from'은 'patch'라고 하지 않는다. 'far from'은 'not' 대신 사용되어 뜻을 강화시킨다.

It is still far from clear exactly what the Thais intend to do.

전치사 'from' 다음에 형용사인 'clear'가 따르는 것은 일반적인 문법 현상으로는 틀린 것이지만 'not'을 강조하는 표현으로 'far from'이 사용될 때 형용사가 따라도 이는 'patch'로 허용이 되는 것이다.

We are far from finished. "우린 전혀 끝난 것이 아니다."

We were far from disappointed when they told us they couldn't come to visit.

정동사 'is'의 주격의 주어가 있어야 하는데 'from' 뒤에서 'everyone'은 목적격이 되니까 일반적인 문법으로는 잘못된 것이다. 하지만 'far from'이 'not'을 대신한 것으로 보면 얘기가 달라진다. 'not everyone is ~'로 보면 부분 부정으로 '전부 다가 ~는 아니다'로 이상하지 않아진다. 겉으로는 이상하지만 그럴만한 이유가 있어서 사용된 것으로 패치에 해당된다.

That comment borders on insubordination, and you should be more careful in the future.

This notion of yours borders upon mutiny!  "너의 이런 생각은 반란에 가깝다."

Be careful, some sections of this paper are bordering on plagiarism.  

"조심해라. 이 페이퍼의 일부는 저작권 침해에 가깝다."

'border'가  'board'와 연관된 단어로 국경이므로 기본적인 뜻으로 사용되고 있다.

He has never exhibited the self-confidence, bordering on arrogance, of his predecessor.

"그는 자신의 전임자의 자신감, 교만에 가까운 자신감을 결코 드러낸 바가 없다."

'which borders on arrogance'를 후치 수식 분사로 전환한 것이다.

Any conversations I had with Martha were short, bordering on abrupt.

'bordering on'에서 본시 'on'은 전치사이므로 뒤에 형용사가 따르면 이상하다. 하지만 'nearly'의 뜻으로 부사처럼 사용되는 일종의 'patch'로 간주한다.

It's probably bordering on impolite but my kids do love asking their grandparents about life "in the olden days."

전치사로 쓰이는 '~ing형'이 ★ 명사 뒤에 위치해서 거의 같은 의미로 쓰일 수 있는 것은 'notwithstanding'뿐이다.

I shall go notwithstanding the weather. (in spite of) "그 날씨에도 불구하고 나는 갈 거다."

notwithstanding A : 'A와 함께(with) 서 있지도(standing) 못하다(not)'에서 '~에도 불구하고'의 '전치사 notwithstanding'이 생긴다. [원래 중세 라틴어로는 'non obstante'(being no hindrance, not standing in the way)에서 'ob-'는 'against'의 뜻인데 영어로 옮기면서 'with'를 'against'의 뜻으로 사용하게 된다. '날씨가 반대하며(with = against) 방해하고 서 있어도(standing) 상관없이(not)'가 맞는 이해지만 '함께(with) 서서 방해해도 상관없이(not)'로 이해해도 된다. 참고로 'obstacle'도 "ob- : against + stare : stand"로 만들어진 단어이다.]

Notwithstanding her remarks, he is very clever. "그녀의 말에도 불구하고 그는 매우 영리하다."

→ Her remarks notwithstanding, he is very clever.

이처럼 ★순서가 바뀌어 나올 수도 있다. 전치사라면 명사 뒤에 위치할 수는 없다. 하지만 독립 분사 구문이나 'with 구문'으로 이해하면 된다. '(with) her remarks notwithstanding'은 '(with) 명사 + ~ ing ~'의 일종으로 볼 수 있다. '그녀의 말이 방해해도 상관없이 (~다)'로 이해하면 된다. 원래는 이 용법이 먼저 있고 나중에 앞으로 가면서 전치사로 쓰이게 된 것이다.

He bought the car notwithstanding (that) the price was very expensive. 

"가격이 매우 비쌌지만 그는 그 차를 구입했다."(의역)

"그는 그 차를 구입했다. 가격이 아주 비싸다는 사실이 방해해도 상관없이."(직역)

'notwithstanding'은 여기서 'although'로 바뀔 수 있으므로 접속사 기능을 하고 있다.

We were invited notwithstanding. "여하튼 우리는 초청되었다."

'notwithstanding'은 접속 부사로 '여하튼'의 뜻으로 쓰이고 있는데 경우에 따라서는 'nevertheless'와 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다.

I didn't like it. Notwithstanding, I remained calm. 

"나는 그거 좋아하지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 냉정을 유지했다."

'('싫어한다'라는 사실이) 반대하며 방해하고 서 있어도 불구하고[상관없이] 냉정을 유지했다.'는 뜻입니다.

[whip up]

1) 재빨리 준비하다 → 후딱 만들다, 척척 준비하다, 만들어내다: to make food or a meal very quickly and easily 

2) 흥분시키다, 유발하다 → 휘저어 놓다 : to encourage or cause people to have strong feelings about something

I have just enough time to whip up an omelette. "오믈렛을 후딱 만들 충분한 시간은 있어."

I used to entertain at home quite a lot, and I can still whip up a fairly decent dinner party. 

"전에는 집에서 아주 자주 즐겼는데 지금도 아주 근사한 디너파티를 척척 준비할 수 있어요."

She criticized the organization for trying to whip up anti-immigrant prejudice.

[해설]

[소유 한정사 + many]

his many friends : '*some his friends'는 부정형 한정사와 소유 한정사의 결합 불가로 사용할 수 없는 표현이지만 ('some of his friends'나 'some friends of his'를 사용한다.) 'his many friends'는 '많은 그의 친구들 전부'를 의미하는 표현으로 사용된다.

"His many friends" means that he has many friends and he said good bye to all of them. "Many of his friends" means that he said good bye to many but not all of his friends. 

"his many friends'는 그에게 많은 친구들이 있으며 그가 그들 모두에게 굿바이라고 말했다는 것을 의미한다. 반면에 'many of his friends'는 많은 친구들에게 굿바이라고 말했지만 그게 친구들 전부를 의미하지 않는다."

He explained his many projects. = He had many projects and he explained all of them.

"그는 자신의 그 많은 프로젝트를 다 설명했다."

He explained many of his projects. = He had some projects and he explained a large proportion of them.

"그는 자신의 프로젝트 중에서 많은 것을 설명했다."

I've read her few books. = She wrote few books and I've read all of them.

"나는 그녀의 몇 안되는 책들을 다 읽었다."

I've read few of her books. = She wrote some books and I've read a small proportion of them.

"나는 그녀의 책들 중에서 몇 권을 읽었다."

['the many'와 'the few']

'the many ~'나 'the few ~'도 전부를 의미할 때 사용되기도 한다.

The many are kept in ignorance while the few prosper. 

"그 많은 다수는 모르지만 그 적은 소수는 성공하고 있다."

The few means not many, but all of those. "'the few'는 많지 않지만 그 전부 다를 의미한다.

: (프랑스어) 이중의 뜻, 양의 : 이중의 (특히 한쪽은 천하고 위태로운) 뜻을 함축한 어구

congress [kάŋgris｜kɔ́ŋgres] : ★성교; 친교; 회의, 학회; 의회, 국회  : (L con- : together + L gradi : walk, step → congredi : meet → L congressus) [원래 함께 가는 데서, 의회나 학회의 뜻인데 이중의 의미로는 '성교'의 뜻도 지닌다.]

[본문]

"I had a (B)[congress] there once."  "한 번은 거기서 학회가 있었어요."

 Elaine blushed. "Oh Sandy, you naughty boy. You shouldn't be telling me that."

'congress'를 '학회'의 뜻인 줄 알면서도 '성교'의 뜻으로 받아들이는 말장난을 하고 있는 셈이다.
