# It happens that Squanto's fabulous odyssey provides a "hook" into the plague story, a hook that our textbooks choose not to use. # It had only been about twenty minutes since they had arrived at the party when Jill pulled Steve aside, obviously bothered about something.

[해설]

[make a pass at ~]

~에게 작업을 걸다 : To make sexual advances toward or propositions to one; to hit on one.

~에 작업을 걸다 'pass'는 저공비행 또는 스쳐 날아가는 것에서 발전하여 접근해서 집적 또는 작업을 거는 의미로 사용된다. 'hit'은 폭력이지만 'hit on'은 건드려보는 것으로 '작업 걸다'의 뜻으로 사용된다. 'come on to ~'도 '꼬시려고 접근하다'의 뜻이 되고 노골적으로 'make advances to'를 사용하기도 합니다. 'pick up 아줌마'는 ㅎ 아줌마 건지려 하는 거죠. 'flirt with 아줌마'는 잘못 농탕치다 미투에 걸립니다. 젊은 시절 제 친구 한 놈에게 'womanizer'(바람둥이: 여자 꽁무니 쫓는 녀석)(옛 투, philanderer)라고 농담을 하기도 했죠.

The plane made a pass at the landing field and pulled up at the last minute. 

"비행기는 착륙장으로 휙 날라 내려오다 마지막 순간에 올라갔다."

The bird made a pass at me because I got too close to its nest.

"새가 나에게 휙 날라왔는데 내가 새 둥지에 너무 가까이 갔기 때문이었다."

위의 두 문장은 애초의 공간적인 의미로 사용된 경우입니다.

He made a pass at his wife's friend. "그는 아내의 친구에게 들이댔다."

접근해 작업을 걸다 : to approach one in a flirtatious, amorous, or sexual manner, to try to seduce one

'advance'는 나아가는 것이기에 전치사 'to'를 사용합니다. 휙 날아가는 공격의 뜻인 'pass' 뒤에는 전치사 'at'을 사용합니다.

Terry was fired after he began making advances to his secretary.

"테리는 그의 비서에게 작업을 걸기 시작한 후에 해고되었다."

I really wish I could go out to a bar or a club without a half dozen men making advances to me. "바나 클럽에 가기만 하면 대 여섯 명의 남자들이 작업을 걸어오는데 정말 아니었으면 좋겠다."

[해설]

'the' 다음에 나오면서 양쪽의 보어 자리를 채울 수 있는 것은 'way'다.

['ring'과 'band']

일반적으로 반지는 'ring', 결혼반지는 'a wedding ring'을 사용한다.

'a wedding band'도 '결혼반지'의 뜻으로 사용된다. 다만 'band'는 대체로 보석이 툭 튀어나오지 않은 평평한 형태의 반지를 지칭하는 편이다.
