#  "Well," Isabel expounded, "the classic example is of a man riding in an elevator mounted on top of a rocket smoothly accelerating into outer space. Despite the speed of the rocket, the man inside--"

   "Let's call him 'elevatornaut," he joked.

   "Fine. A real 'nautcase'" Isabel countered with grin. "Anyway, as the elevator is climbing, the guy is somehow still rooted to the floor. According to Uncle Albert, that's because the force of gravity and the acceleration are indistinguishable."

[어휘 또는 표현]

expound [ikspáund] : [이론·취지 등을] [남에게] 소상하게 설명하다, 상술하다; [경전 등을] 해설하다, 해석하다  : (L ex- : out + ponere : to put, from exponere : expose, explain) ['explanare'(planus : plain)과 같은 뜻이지만 [불어 거쳐서 스펠링이 혼란스럽지만 차분히 밖으로(ex-) 놓는(ponere)  데서, 'ponere'는 'postpone'과 같은 어원에서]

elevatornaut : elevator + astronaut : [ㅎ 엘리비행사]

nautcase : (astro)naut + case [ㅎ 'nutcase'가 '미치광이'인 데서, ㅎㅎ 우주똘아이]

protege [próutəʒèi] : (프랑스어) 피보호자; 부하; 제자(pupil)  : (L protegere : cover in front → F proteger → F or E protect : pro- : in front + L tegere : to cover) ['protect'와 같은 어원에서, ㅎ 보스나 스승이라면 부하나 제자의 앞을(pro-) 커버(cover, tegere)해 주어야지요.]

[해설]

[take (something) (right) on the chin]

원래 권투에서 턱을 맞는 데서 유래한 표현이다.

1) (구어) (종종 비유) 턱(급소)에 [타격·주먹 등을] 얻어맞다 : to receive an impact, especially a punch, on one's chin

He took the heavyweight champ's deadly left hook on the chin, and he was knocked out cold then and there.

"그는 헤비급 챔피언의 레프트 훅을 턱에 한방을 맞고 현장에서 완전히 KO 되었다."

2) (구어)[실패·처벌·험담 등을] 지그시 견뎌내다, 냉정히 받아넘기다 : to endure some hardship, difficulty, setback, or defeat, especially with stoic courage or poise

He just took the criticism on the chin and kept working on his art. 

"그는 비난을 그냥 받아들이고 자신의 예술에 진력했다."

They didn't go easy on him, but he took it on the chin, and got through the interrogation.

'criticism'이나 'defeat' 등을 대신하여 흔히 'it'을 사용한다.

3) [패배·역경 등을] 받아들이다 : to receive or suffer the full brunt of a defeat or hardship

Our boss messes around with the company's money, but we're the ones who have to take it on the chin when things go wrong.

"우리 보스는 회사 돈으로 빈둥거리지만 상황이 나빠져서 그걸 받아들여야 하는 사람은 우리들이다."

Why do I have to take it on the nose for something I didn't do? 

"왜 내가 하지도 않은 일에 대해서 내가 아구창을 맞아야 하는데?"

간혹 'chin' 대신 'nose'가 사용되기도 한다.

open-ended : (기한·수량 등의) 제한[제약]이 없는, 끝이 정하여지지 않는; (허용 범위가) 대략적인, 자유로운; 중도 변경이 가능한,

[nothing if not ~]

~ 빼면 아무것도 아니다, 다른 건 몰라도 아주 ~한 : at the very least; certainly; decidedly and unmistakably; undeniably, noticeably having some quality

A is nothing if not B

문법적인 구조에 따라 직역하면 A는 'B가 아니라면 아무것도 아니다'인데 'B를 빼면(아니라면) 아무것도 아니다'로 해석할 수 있다.

좋은 의미로 말할 때 쓰는 표현이 아니므로 'B를 빼면 시체지'라고 해석할 수도 있다.

내려가면서 해석하고 싶으면 '다른 건(not : B가 아닌 것은 다른 것에 해당) 아니지만(nothing) B 이기는 하다'로 해석할 수도 있다.

Canada is nothing if not beautiful. "캐나다는 다른 건 아니지만 아름답기는 하다."

I am nothing if not critical. "다른 게 아니고 비판하는 겁니다."

Professor Fish has been nothing if not professional. "피시 교수는 다른 건 몰라도 프로페셔널하다."

He is nothing if not persistent. (He can be a nuisance.) "그는 집요한 거 빼면 시체다." 

(성가신 사람일 수 있다는 의미)

He is nothing if not practical. (He is relentlessly pragmatic.) "그는 실제적인 거 빼면 시체다." 

(가혹할 정도로 실용적이란 의미)

He is nothing if not predictable. (He is a creature of habit.) "그는 다른 건 몰라도 예측은 가능하다." 

(습관의 피조물이란 의미)

A : Sister Burstead was cross with Granny Duncan?  "벌스테드 수녀님이 덩컨 할머니에게 성질낸 거야?"

B : She was nothing if not cross. "그 수녀님 성질내는 거 빼면 아무것도 아니다. / 시체지 뭐."

'comma' 사용해서 분리시킬 경우도 있다.

Wigglesworth was nothing if not polite. "위글스워스는 다른 것은 아니어도 예절은 있지."

(구어) 절대 안 돼 : I will never allow it; under no circumstances will that be permitted to happen
