'was'의 보어 자리가 비어 있고 'had been'의 보어 자리도 비어 있으므로 선행사 포함의 관계사 'where'(= the place where)가 사용되어야 한다.

(바지, 지퍼 등이) 풀리다  → 엇나가다,  뜻대로 [계획대로] 안 되다, 냉정, 자제심을 잃다  : whatever is fastening had become unfastened; come apart; In the figurative sense, it means that something has either not gone as planned, or has failed in some way. [지퍼 정도 풀려도 괜찮지만 정신이 맛 갈 정도로 풀리면 심각한 것이죠.]

Afters of stating firmly that he was not guilty, the prisoner came clean and admitted to stealing the jewels.

강조 구문에서 'it was' 뒤에 'that'이 생략되기도 한다. 강조 구문을 해제하면 'to find whatever he was seeking'이 된다.

[해설]

[hold (down) the fort]

(공격·비판에 대해서) 자기의 입장을 지키다, 물러서지 않다 : to maintain a secure position

(사람이 없는 동안) 현상을 유지해 가다 : to assume responsibility, especially in another's absence

집 잘 지켜라 : to take care of a place while someone who is usually there is gone; such as a store or one's home (From western movies) ['fort'는 '요새'의 뜻으로 '요새를 지키다'의 뜻에서 온 표현이다. 원래는 'hold the fort'인데 어쩌다 보니 미국식 영어에서 흔히 'down'을 넣어서 사용하기도 한다.]

His business partner is holding the fort while he is away. 

"그의 사업 파트너가 그가 외출 중이어서 일을 대신하고 있어."

I'll be out of the office for a few hours - will you hold the fort until I get back?
