#1. For some reason, this is a very difficult lesson for us to learn. We have, I think, a very rigid and limited definition of what an advantage is. We think of things as helpful that actually aren't and think of other things as unhelpful that in reality leave us stronger and wiser. Part One of David and Goliath is an attempt to explore the consequences of that error. When we see the giant, why do we automatically assume the battle is his (A)[ ] the winning? And what does it take to be that person who doesn't accept the conventional order of things as a given -- like David, or Lawrence of Arabia, or, for that matter, Vivek Ranadive and his band of nerdy Silicon Valley girls?

[#1. 해석] 어째서 인지 이것은 우리가 배우기 매우 힘든 교훈이다. 내 생각에 우리는 장점이라는 것에 대해 매우 엄격하고 제한적인 정의를 한다. 우리는 실제로는 도움이 되지 않는 것들을 도움이 된다고 생각하고 사실 우리를 더 강하게, 더 현명하게 만드는 다른 것들을 도움이 되지 않는다고 생각한다. 다윗과 골리앗의 일 장은 이런 과오의 결과를 탐구하고자 하는 시도이다. 우리가 거인을 보았을 때 왜 이기려고만 하면 전투는 그의 승리라고 우리는 자동적으로 가정하는 걸까요? 전통적인 사물의 질서를 당연한 것으로 받아들이지 않는 사람이--다윗이나 아라비아의 로렌스나 앞에 나온 문제에 관한한 비벡 래나디브와 그의 실리콘밸리의 괴짜 여자애들 같은--되려면 무엇이 필요할까요?

[#3. 해석] 너는 부모들이 유명하니까 어떤 일자리든 취하기만 하면 돼. 허나 우리들 중 일부는 실제로 일자리에 지원해야만 해.

[해설]

[be 소유대명사[yours, his, hers, ours, etc] for the asking]

be there for the asking

be free for the asking

: 요청만 하면 돼, 있으니까 요청만 해, 요청만 하면 공짜야.

I have a job opening. It's yours for the asking. 

"일자리 하나 비어 있어. 와서 요청만 하면 돼."

If this is something you would like to take a chance on, it's yours for 5 dollars.

"이게 모험을 걸어 볼 만한 것이면 5 달러만 내면 돼."

여기서 for는 '교환'을 의미하는 전치사이다. 

'for the asking'에서도 'for'는 ★교환을 의미하고 'the'는 '다른 게 아니고 그'를 의미한다. 즉, '요청하는 행위와 교환해서' 그렇게 된다는 뜻이다.

Do you want to use my car? It's yours for the asking.

I have an extra winter coat that's yours for the asking.

If one just asks (for something); simply by asking; on request

'just'나 'simply'에서 보듯이 'the'에는 ★ '~만'의 의미를 붙여 해석하는 것이 좋다.

be for the taking : if you want it

be there for the taking

be free for the taking

'the taking'도 흔히 쓰인다. 

for the taking : available to easily obtain, achieve, or steal

It is basically like saying "It's all open and available to you, all you need to do is go over and take it.

They're yours for the taking. = They're yours if you want to take them.

"They're yours for the taking" means I have something that you can have if you simply take it from me. 

For example, "I have three bottles of soda, they're yours for the taking" means if you come and get the bottles of soda you can have them.

Our probable valedictorian has been pretty distracted lately, so I think the title is yours for the taking. "우리의 졸업생 고별사 유력 후보는 최근에 아주 산만해졌어, 가서 그 자격을 취하기만 하면 돼."

There's no guard, and they have no security system. That safe is ours for the taking. "경비원도 없어, 그리고 보안 시스템도 없어. 금고는 가서 가져오면 돼."

The throne was his for the taking, if only he knew it. 

"왕관은 가서 가져오기만 하면 되었다. 알기만 했다면."

The battle is his for the winning. "싸움은 이기려만 한다면 그의 것이다."
