When he saw the body, he threw up his lunch. "시체를 보고서 그는 점심 먹을 것을 토했다."

['fetch up'과 'cast up'도 토하다의 뜻으로 사용되고 영국식으로는 'bring up'(다른 뜻 많음)을 사용하기도 한다.]

숨다; 처박혀 있다; 동면하다 : to stay in a safe place, often as a way of avoiding something or hiding from someone; to place in or as if in a refuge or hiding place [ㅎ 동물이 동면(hibernating) 하는 caves(동굴)이나 holes((동물의) 굴. 누추한 집, a rabbit hole(토끼굴)에 비유해서]

1) 능동형

if you hole up or are holed up somewhere, you stay there, especially because you are hiding.

We just holed up at home with some good movies while it snowed all weekend.

"우린 그냥 멋진 영화 몇 편을 갖고 집에 처박혀 있었고 주말 내내 눈이 내렸다."

'stand up'이면 '완전히 서다'의 뜻이지만 'hole up'이면 '전체를 구멍에 넣다'의 뜻이 됩니다.

We'd better find some shelter and hole up until the storm passes.

"폭풍이 지나갈 때까지 우린 쉴 곳을 찾아 잠수타는 게 좋을 것 같다."

While writing his book, he holed up for a year at a cabin in the woods.

"자신의 책을 쓰는 동안 그는 숲속의 오두막에서 일 년을 숨어지냈다."

2) 수동형

She was holed up in the mountains somewhere, trying to avoid the media.

"그녀는 산맥의 어딘가에 처박혀서 미디어를 피하려 했다."

'place oneself in ~'는 능동으로 '스스로를 ~에 위치시키다'의 뜻인데 'be placed in ~'의 수동태면 '~에 위치되게 하다'로 우리말로는 '처박혀 있게 하다'의 뜻과 비슷하다. 'hole up'의 경우에는 능동의 재귀 대명사를 사용하는 것은 드물고 수동으로 'be holed up'으로 '처박혀 있게 하다'의 뜻으로 주로 사용합니다.

By noon he was holed up way to the south, looking back at the recycling plant from the rear.

2) 높이 휘두르다, 들어 올리다  : to raise or elevate something very quickly.

She threw her hand up once she realized the answer to the question.

3) 붙여 올리다, 띄어 올리다 : to project or display on a surface above the ground

The police threw up a few images of suspected criminals on the screen to see if the witness recognized  any of them. "경찰은 혐의자들의 몇몇 이미지를 스크린에 띄어 놓고 목격자가 알아보는지 살폈다."

4) [문제 등을] 야기하다  : to produce new problems or ideas:

The meeting threw up some interesting ideas. "회의는 몇 가지 재미있는 아이디어를 내놓았다."
