# At the same time, the Snobs must win a few. For example, the mixing together of words of different language in a single phrase is incorrect (just as mixing together is redundant). H. L. Mencken, the daring of American lexicographers and certainly no Snob in the study of what he called the American language objected to the phrase per year. As Macken put it, "Even Congress, which is an ass, always uses per (A)[         ], not per day." If you like Latin, you should say "per annum", if you prefer English, say "a year". # In the American South during that same period, it would have been highly unusual for a white landowner to have such a public relationship with a slave. Sexual relations between whites and blacks were considered normally repugnant. 우리 말과 달리 영어는 'student'의 반복은 비문으로 간주됩니다. 지금은 역행 필수 생략이 적용된 경우입니다.

뒤에 반복되는 'students'를 순행 필수 생략을 한 경우입니다.

He was the most dangerous (*enemy) of enemies.

"그는 적 중에서도 가장 위험한 적이다."

'of' 뒤에 'all'도 없이 (부정형) 명사구(enemies)가 따르면서 반복되는 'enemy'가 필수 역행 생략된 경우이다.

We parted the best (*friends) of friends. "우리는 더없이 친한 치구로 헤어졌다."

[직역 : 우리는 친구들 중에 최고의 친구로 헤어졌다.]

이런 표현들은 그냥 'the most dangerous enemy'나 'the best friends'로 써서 무방할 텐데 이런 식으로 조금은 딱딱하고 으스대는 마치 죽마를 탄 듯한 표현이라고 해서 'stilted style'이라고 한다.

She was not pretty at the best of times but after she'd been crying she looked really ugly. "그녀는 가장 좋은 때에도 예쁘지는 않았지만 계속 울고 있었던지라 정말 추해 보였다."

Life on a Chinese river barge was, at the best of times, uncomfortable and monotonous.

해석할 때는 우리말에 맞게 의역하면 된다.
