~ 빼면 아무것도 아니다, 다른 건 몰라도 아주 ~한 : at the very least; certainly; decidedly and unmistakably; undeniably, noticeably having some quality

A is nothing if not B

문법적인 구조에 따라 직역하면 A는 'B가 아니라면 아무것도 아니다'인데 'B를 빼면(아니라면) 아무것도 아니다'로 해석할 수 있다.

좋은 의미로 말할 때 쓰는 표현이 아니므로 'B를 빼면 시체지'라고 해석할 수도 있다.

내려가면서 해석하고 싶으면 '다른 건(not : B가 아닌 것은 다른 것에 해당) 아니지만(nothing) B 이기는 하다'로 해석할 수도 있다.

[be hard done by]

항상 수동태로 사용되는 'be hard done by'에서 'by'는 'toward'의 뜻으로 사용되고 있다. 수동태의 '행위자 표시의 by'와 무관하면 'by 행위자'는 생략되어 있다.

I think you've been hard done by--you worked twice as long as anyone else.

"내 생각에 당신은 부당한 대우를 받아 왔어요. 다른 누구보다도 2 배나 오래 일했잖아요."

He complains that he has been done by.
