  It wasn't what Raymond was saying, but the bizarrely intense manner in which he was saying it, that caused Pracht--a normally placid individual--to lose his temper.

  "You know, Ray," he said, fast reaching the boiling point, "I've done my best to try to like you--and it hasn't been easy. Because, frankly, I find you untrusting, unpleasant, and uptight."

  Good, Ray thought, we're going to get (A)[  ] the nitty-gritty. "You're entitled to your exalted opinion," he commented, for the first time ever addressing the scientist in an arrogant tone.    "But of course, this year it's a foregone conclusion in physics," he stated, smiling at his future daughter-in-law. "I hope your Swedish is good enough to give an acceptance speech."

    "하지만 물론 올해는 물리학 부문은 뻔한 결론이 난 거지."라고 프라트 교수는 말하면서 미래의 며느리감인 이사벨을 보며 웃었다. "자네가 수락 연설을 할 정도로 충분히 스웨덴 어를 알기를 희망하네."

[stroke (one's) ego]

남의 자존심을 만족시키다 : to appeal to one's pride or vanity; to flatter and praise someone

I couldn't resist stroking my ego a bit by reading some of the good reviews for my latest film.

[해설]

nitty-gritty [nítigríti] : 사물의 핵심, 요긴한 일, 요체; 가장 긴요한, 본질적인 : fundamental, detailed, or proving : the essential substance or details of a matter; basics; crux [라임은 맞춰 사용된 것인데 어원은 불명이다. 노예 매매선에서 노예들이 가버리고 남은 것이 무엇이든 그걸 지칭하는 데서 유래되었다는 설도 있다.]

[get (down) to the nitty-gritty]

Let's skip the chitchat and get down to the nitty-gritty. "잡담은 그만하고 핵심으로 갑시다."

Let's get down to the nitty-gritty--how much will it cost? "핵심으로 가서 얼마요?" [요즘 말로 하면 'cut to the chase']

Good, Ray thought, we're going to get (A)[to] the nitty-gritty. "좋지요, 우리 핵심으로 가보지요."

I don't have to tell you that when it gets (B)[down] to the nitty-gritty, every letter helps.

   It wasn't a request. It was an order, given in a harsh voice.

  The laird was used to getting his way. And why not? Gabrielle thought. He looked strong enough to lift a horse and not (A)[      ] a sweat. 제멋대로 하다 : to get or have what one wants; to have things done according to one's personal preference or desires

If Tommy doesn't get his way, he'll start having a tantrum that could last all night.

rev up one's engines : 가속화시키다

Crime wasn't like it is = Crime wasn't as it is

'양쪽의 as'를 대신하여 간혹 'like'을 쓰기도 한다. 'what'과 'the way'와 달리 문법적으로 약간의 문제가 있지만 구어체에서 그냥 사용하기도 한다.

bad-ass = badass : [사람이] 난폭한, 질이 나쁜; [사람이] 밀어붙이는; (미 속어) 매우 좋은, 인상적인

yours truly : 보통은 'I' 또는 'me'의 뜻이다. 본문에서도 'me'의 뜻으로 이해하면 된다.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

여기서 'yours'는 'people you like; your wife, husband, parents, children, friends or even your neighbors'의 뜻이다.

[keep ~ in clover, be in clover]

풍족하게 살다, 호사스럽게 살다 : to enjoy a life of money and comfort; living without financial stress [클로버는 소들이 좋아하는 풀인 것에서, '클로버 속에서'살면 풍족한 삶. 'like pigs in clover'나 'rolling in clover'도 비슷한 표현이다.]

With the income from the family estate, she's in clover.

"집안의 가산에서 나오는 소득으로 그녀는 풍족한 삶을 누리고 있다."
