#1.   "The mice?"

It gets even worse when the detectives start going through the 'nest' and find a whole stack of Polaroids: of Annabelle walking to school; of Annabelle out at recess; of Annabelle playing hopscotch with her best friend, Dori Petracelli. . ."

    D.D closed her eyes. "All right, (B)[     ] to the chase."

    Bobby shrugged. "There was nothing the police could do. They had no description of the man, and in regard to Annabelle, they didn't have a crime. It's '82, before the anti-stalking laws. They revisit Annabelle's school, interrogating bus drivers, janitors, male teachers, anyone who's come into contact with Annabelle and therefore might have formed an 'attachment' to her. They work the scene in Mrs. Watt's house. Initial examination of evidence doesn't yield prints, doesn't yield much of anything. They visited mental health institutes, soup kitchens, the usual roundup of perverts. It was all local knowledge in those days, and it doesn't get them anywhere.

  It was true enough: her whole leg was aching now and she was tired from balancing herself against the table with her crutch. But the thought of going back into the bedroom, lying on the cot alone while listening to the wind howl, her mind spinning with questions, her imagination running wild with what he was doing, didn't (D)[     ] it.

    "없죠. 이건 모든 면에서 볼 때 완전히 뒤죽박죽이고요. 물론 와츠 부인은 짜증이 났는데 이제 누군가가 자신의 다락에서 살아던 것 같았기 때문이지요. 하지만 러셀 그레인저에 비하면 그건 아무것도 아닌 거죠. 그는 자신과 가족들을 보호하기 위해 주 방위군의 배치를 강하게 요구했어요. 형사들이 그 '둥지'를 살펴 보고서 한 무더기의 폴라로이드 사진들을 발견하고서 상황은 더욱 악화되었죠. 등교하는 애너벨, 쉬는 시간의 애너벨, 가장 친한 친구인 도리 페트라첼리와 돌차기 놀이를 하는 애너벨의 사진들. . ."

    "디디는 눈을 감았다. "알았어. 그만 중요한 부분을 얘기해."

    바비는 어깨를 으쓱했다. "경찰이 할 수 있었던 것이 전무했지요. 용의자의 인상 파기도 없고 애너벨에 관해서 범죄 성립도 안 되었죠. 1982년이고 스토킹 법 제정 이전이었죠. 애너벨의 학교로 가서 버스 운전사들도 심문해보고 경비들 남자 선생님들 애너벨과 접촉을 새서 그녀에 대한 집착을 갖게 되었을 가능성이 있는 모든 사람을 심문했죠. 와츠 부인 집의 현장을 살펴보았죠. 증거에 대한 첫 조사는 지문이 나오지 않았고 어떤 증거도 찾지 못했어요. 형사들은 여자애들을 좋아하고 그 노부인의 다락에서 살았을 부랑자/아동 성애자 찾으려 했지만 헛바퀴만 돌린 것이었죠. 정신 병원,  변태들이 흔히 모이는 곳인 무료 배식소들을 찾아가 보았다. 그 당시에는 그렇게 생각되었지만 그것도 아무 소용이 없었다."

    그건 충분히 사실이었다. 다리 전체가 이제 아프기 시작했고 크러치를 테이블에 대고 균형을 유지하느라 피곤했다. 하지만 침실로 다시 들어가 간이침대에 홀로 누워서 바람 소리를 듣겠다는 생각은 온갖 질문들이 팽팽 회전하고 상상은 그가 무엇을 하고 있었는지에 대해 마구 거칠어져서 성공할 수가 없었다.

[all the way around] 

모든 면에서 볼 때, 전체를 둘러볼 때 : As a metaphor "all the way around" just means "if you look at all parts of this idea". 

Showing up early has no downside. It gives us extra time to gather our thoughts and get prepared, and consequently we are sure to make a better impression in every situation. All the way around, this work habit reduces stress. We were playing against a more experienced team, and we just couldn't cut it.

The press is having a field day after the evidence was released.
