In 2008, United started charging for bags and other airlines quickly followed suit.

['what'은 선행사 포함의 관계사로 전치사 'for'의 목적어 자리와 전치사 'worth'의 목적어 자리를 채워준다. 'it'은 지금 하는 얘기이고 'for'는 가치라 '해봤자지만'의 뜻이다. 하지만 'for all one/it is worth'와는 ★의미가 같을 수도 있고 다를 수도 있다.]

Here's my opinion, for what it's worth. "제 의견은 이렇습니다. 별건 아니지만요."

'for what it's worth'와 다른 뜻인 경우와 비슷한 뜻인 경우

1) (다른 뜻인 경우)  최대한으로, 기량을 다해 

for all it is worth : 최대한으로 (이용해서), 기량을 다해 : to the full extent of its powers, resources, energy

for all one is worth : 기량을 다해, 전력으로 : to the full extent of one's powers, resources, energy

Mr Salinger plays the ingredients (of his novel) for all he is worth.

"샐린저 씨는 기량을 다해 (자기 소설의) 주요 등장인물들을 연기했다."

With the wind blowing for all it was worth against them they had a hard time of it at the oars.

[go / get into high gear]

최대한의 활동을 시작하다, 열심히 하다 : to be or become very active, exciting, or productive  [자동차의 기어를 높이는 데서]

The movie really goes into high gear when Williams appears on screen. 

"윌리엄즈가 스크린에 등장했을 때 영화는 정말로 본격적인 모습이 된다."

I've always been a good student, but now that I'm trying to get a scholarship for college, my studying has gone into high gear. "나는 항상 열심히 하는 학생이었지만 이제 대학 장학금을 받으려고 애쓰고 있어서 내 공부는 본격적으로 가동되었다."

We need to get in gear if we want to finish this project on time. 

"이 프로젝트를 제 시간에 끝내기 원하면 우리는 기어를 가동시켜야 한다."

이처럼 경우에 따라 'high'가 생략되기도 한다.

Everybody is in high gear at work these days. "요즘은 모두가 풀가동으로 일을 한다."

상태를 나타내려고 'be 동사'가 사용되기도 한다.

Retailers are moving into high gear as the holiday season approaches. 

"소매상들은 휴가 시즌이 다가 오자 열라 열심히 하고 있다."

The Senate hearings are just shifting into high gear. "상원 청문회가 막 급 가동 되고 있다."

All right, let's kick it into high gear for the last part of today's workout!
