#    After I got all packed, I sort of counted my dough. I don't remember exactly how much I had, but I was pretty loaded. My grandmother'd just sent me a wad about a week before. [어원]

'marbles'는 한때 가구(furniture)를 뜻하는 슬랭이었는데 불어로 가구인 'meubles'를 'marbles'로 잘못 표기한 것이었다. 또 당시에는 'the human mind'에는 사용되지 않은 'mind-furniture'를 포함한 물건들이 가득한 곳이라 생각되었다. 이 두 가지가 섞여서 '마음속의 있어야 할 가구를 잃어버렸다'라는 것이 '제정신이 아니다'라는 뜻으로 사용되게 되었다.

[take on ~]

~와 붙다, 싸우다, 몸싸움을 하다 : to accept (someone) as an opponent in a competition or fight

It was brave of you to take on a man twice your size. "너보다 덩치가 두 배인 남자와 붙은 것은 용감했다."

'부사 on' 다음에 생략된 것은 '자기 몸'이고 거기에 누군가를 잡아서(take) 붙인(on) 것으로 이해하면 된다. [자세한 것은 구동사 파트의 'take on'을 참고하기 바란다.]

[bring up the rear]

: 맨 뒤를 맡다, 맨 뒤에서 가다, 후위에 위치하다; 꼴찌를 하다, 꼴찌로 들어오다 : to be at the back of a group that is going somewhere; to be the last in a line or group; to move last in a group of people; to move along behind everyone else; to be at the end of the line ; come last in a race or other contests [originally referred to marching soldiers : 우리말로는 '앞에서 끌고 뒤에서 밀고 간다'라는 말이 있지요. 이 표현은 바로 '뒤에서 밀고 간다'에 해당되는 표현입니다. 'take'와 'bring' 중에서 나아가는 방향이 중심이 되는 곳이므로 'bring'을 사용하고 'up'은 앞쪽을 뜻합니다. He had his goddam toilet kit under his arm. "Why the hell don'tcha shut up when I tellya to?" he said. He sounded pretty nervous. 'one'의 기본적인 의미는 '한 방'입니다. 순수한 의미로 '주먹(fist) 한 방'의 뜻일 수도 있고 '키스 (한 방)'을 뜻할 수도 있고 '방구(fart) 한 방'을 뜻할 수도 있습니다.

Lay one on me. = Lay a kiss on me. = Give me a kiss.

It's going great. He's a perfect gentleman. I just want to grab him and lay one on him.
