[해설]

[hit the ceiling / roof]

분노하다, 격노하다 : to lose one's temper [ㅎ 머리가 천장(ceiling)이나 지붕(roof)에 부딪힐 정도로 화나다, 꼭지가 돌다, 뒤집어지다(flip out). 길길이 날뛰다. 본시 'up in the house roof'나 'at the house-top'이면 'enraged'의 뜻이다.]

When I told him what happened, he hit the ceiling. "일어난 일을 그에게 말했을 때 그는 격노했다."

Dad'll hit the ceiling when he finds out I've left school. 

"아버지가 내가 학교를 그만둔 거 알면 길길이 날 뛰실 거야."

If he did what she said, she was happy, but if he didn't, she went through the ceiling.

"그가 그녀가 말한 것을 했을 경우에는 그녀는 만족했지만 아니면 길길이 날뛰었다."

Dad will hit the roof when he finds out I dented the car.

The boss hit the roof when he saw that we'd already blown through the budget.

"보스는 우리가 이미 예산을 다 날려버린 것을 알았을 때 꼭지가 홱 돌았다."

My parents are going to hit the roof if they find out we had a party here! 

"저희 엄마, 아빠는 여기서 우리가 파티를 한 거 할게 되면 뒤집어지신다."

When I was expelled from school, my parents went through the roof. 

"내가 학교에서 퇴학당했을 때 부모님들은 꼭지가 돌았다."

더 강하게 표현하면 뚫고 나가는 겁니다.

[Easy does it!]

(구어) 천천히 조심해서 해라; 그렇게 화내지 마라. : proceed slowly and carefully; calm down; be careful

'easy' 대신 'gently', 'slowly'를 사용하기도 한다. [신약 성경에서(마태 복음 6장 34절) 파르티아 사람들이 싸워 쉽게 이기는 데서 나타난 표현에서 발전했다고 한다. 관용 표현으로 'easy'를 주어처럼 생각한다.]

"조심해서 해라. 값비싼 예술품을 옮기는 거잖아."

Whoa, easy does it, Fred—it's not the server's fault that you don't like your food.

[hold one's head high]

가슴을 펴다; 거만하게 굴다 : behave proudly; maintain one's dignity

우리말로 '머리를 펴다'는 없어서 '가슴을 펴다'로 패러프레이즈 하고 있다. '거만하게 굴다'는 적합지 않은 거 같다. '당당하게 굴다'로 바꿔야 할 듯.

After the bankruptcy Mr. Jones still held his head high. "파산 후에도 존스 씨는 여전히 당당하게 행동했다."

Grandma told Brian he could hold his head up because he'd tried extremely hard.

"할머니는 아주 열심히 했으므로 가슴 펴고 당당하라고 브라이언에게 말했다."

'high' 대신 'up'을 사용하기도 한다.
